e-learn launches study@home for ged test prep

CEO: 'Taking a course isn't like going to class, it's like going to the movies.'

December 13, 2005 - Corvallis, OR - Today, learning solutions provider e-learn, inc. launched its interactive, motivational software program, Study@Home, a student-centered product designed for adult learners focusing on basic skills and GED test prep and readiness.

The GED is General Education Development, the adult learner's alternative to a high school diploma. Like all e-learn solutions, Study@Home courseware and supplemental materials are inclusive of rigorous standards and support materials recommended for GED programs by the American Council on Education. Still, e-learn's package differs from traditional learning solutions-the core of its courseware is motivation, creating a dramatically different educational model designed to overcome challenges common to adult learners and their networks, according to Michael Ormsby, e-learn CEO.

"E-learn's courseware delivers learning that's interactive and intrinsically rewarding," said Ormsby, "Instructional design elements - modeled on video games and developed with Macromedia Flash - include contemporary graphics, narrative and display, with continual feedback that learners need. Courseware is also rich with meaningful cinematic characterization, humor and plot, giving students a lively learning environment that's relevant to their education, careers and life. For the student, taking an e-learn course isn't like going to class, it's like going to the movies." (

is a bundled program with courseware and tutorials in reading, writing, language arts, basic math, social studies, science, critical thinking and problem solving. The GED/basic skills program also provides learning tools, management, study guides, testing and assessment critical for adult learners in self-guided programs, but with the flexibility and accountability needed for effective workplace, school-based and community-based education programs. The software can be implemented as an online browser-based solution or as a CD-Rom hosted model. A is available at e-learn's adult learning community, .

"Study@Home is quality content coupled with a steadfast focus on the student experience," Ormsby said. "The reality is, learning is hard work, and few do it for pure joy of knowing. Instead, our learning process is driven by interest-the need to know about the things that have value and meaning in our lives. We model on a new instructional paradigm emerging, and consequently, we offer student-centered education that's self-motivational and very different from the traditional content-driven model.

"Interest - this is the missing piece in most educational programs. Think how different our adult educational system would be if it had to compete in the marketplace with video games, MTV and all the other media. We're not afraid to place our learning programs in the marketplace alongside video games, shopping malls, workplace and family demands and everything else that competes for the attention of the undereducated adult in this country. We know that if we cannot make our learning intrinsically interesting and dynamically retentive, it won't succeed on any level. We've met that challenge by creating a truly different kind of learning experience. Study@Home courseware addresses motivation and perseverance at the core. As a result, every learner can be successful, regardless of how long it's been since the learner was in the classroom or the setbacks of that classroom experience," Ormsby added.

  • Access to the online learning community gives the adult learner a supportive network of instructors and peers.
